Lt. Nigel Tibbits DSC

Nigel Tibbits' primary duty for the raid was to design, and oversee the installation of, the huge explosive charge to be fitted deep within Campbeltown's hull - which he accomplished with some assistance from the Special Operations Executive's secret weapons centre.

Just prior to entering the estuary of the Loire, he and his team set the fuses hidden within the charge; and in the run-in to target Nigel took over the wheel and in conjunction with Lieutenant Commander Beattie, conned the old ship to the exact spot where it had been planned she should hit the huge dock gate for maximum effect.

Nigel evacuated from Campbeltown onto Rodier's ML 177. Sadly, she was hit and set on fire, then Tibbits was cut down by machine-gun fire from the shore while in conversation with Campbeltown's No. 1, Lieutenant Chris Gough.
