Lt Leslie Fenton DSC*

Liverpool born Leslie Fenton exemplified the often exotic backgrounds brought to the Senior Service by the young men who joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. A movie director and married to a glamorous movie 'star', he had set his career aside in order to 'do his bit'.

As captain of ML 156 during the raid, his job was to carry Captain Dickie Hooper's Commando party into the Old Entrance. Sadly, however, the boat was hit early on, a shell which struck the bridge wounding both Fenton and Hooper.

With both engine and structural damage, ML 156 was eventually forced to turn back and make for the open sea where crew, Commandos and ship's cat were transferred to a destroyer.
