Added to the raid at the insistence of Combined Operations, tiny MTB 74 developed engine problems at the last minute necessitating the hurried installation of a new Packard engine - normally a dockyard job which Chief Motor Mechanic Lovegrove and his engineers completed by themselves. Lovegrove was still tuning the engine as the MTB entered the estuary.

With Campbeltown in place the MTB's torpedoes were laid against the Old Entrance lock gates. The boat then took on numerous survivors from the destroyer and made for home at high speed.

Close to the estuary mouth, the MTB slowed down to pick up survivors and was fatally hit. The boat's Commander, Sub Lieutenant Wynn, was injured, and blown into the wheelhouse where he was found and rescued by Lovegrove. Of the many who abandoned ship, Wynn and Lovegrove were amongst only a handful to survive.
