Sgt. Tom Durrant VC

A member of Lieutenant Swayne's Demolition Team tasked with destroying targets in and around the New Entrance lock, Tom shared in the general disappointment when their ML 307 failed to achieve a landing and sailed instead for the open sea, and home.

Outside the estuary they encountered a German destroyer flotilla and were engaged by the German ship Jaguar at which Tom, manning the ML's Lewis Gun mounting, continued to fire in spite of numerous, and ultimately mortal, wounds.

At the conclusion of the action it was actually the Captain of the Jaguar who suggested that Tom be awarded his country's highest honour - the Victoria Cross.
